PURCELLVILLE, Va.  April 15, 2022 — The Town of Purcellville would like to thank the community for the outpouring of support for the refugees from the Ukraine.  The Town Hall served as one of the drop-off location for donations of coats, blankets, heavy socks, and gloves.  The magnitude of items dropped off over the last 3 weeks, in support of this program, has been tremendous.

Reflecting on the plight of the millions of refugees, Mayor Fraser stated, “The people of Ukraine are in our thoughts and prayers for relief, strength, and peace. I thank the members of our community for providing these needed items from Purcellville to the Ukrainian people at this time of war.”

This collection effort was launched by Northern Virginia elected leaders in conjunction with the Northern Virginia Regional Commission (NVRC).  A similar aid program was initiated by the region’s leaders in 2013 to assist Syrian refugees who fled their homeland to Turkey.  Paxton Moving is assisting with the collection logistics and shipping of the items to  Wilmington, North Carolina where a local company will ship the donations to Poland for distribution to refugees in Poland and residents in Ukraine.

I’m heartened by the outpouring of support from the residents of the Town of Purcellville and Western Loudoun and touched by their overwhelming generosity,” remarked David Mekarski, Town Manager.  “Every single person who came to Town Hall with their numerous donations stand unified with the entire nation praying for the end of this horrific war and for the peace and security of all Ukrainians.”

The Town of Purcellville, Virginia

“Purcellville-your small Town, where history and progress intersect and people prosper,” is an award-winning town of approximately 10,000 residents located in Loudoun County, approximately 50 miles west of Washington, DC. Having received the 2021 Virginia Municipal League Innovation Award for Environmental Sustainability and in years past, the prestigious Siemens Sustainability Award for Small Communities, Purcellville continues to be honored for innovation and green initiatives.  The Town most recently received the Tree City USA Award for the 14th consecutive year. The Town was reaffirmed as a AAA rated community by S&P Global Ratings, the highest credit rating possible, and was ranked “Safest City” in Virginia in 2020. Once a stop along the W&OD rail line, which has been converted to a multi-use trail from Alexandria, VA to Purcellville, the Town has maintained its historic old-town feel through the restoration and maintenance of its many downtown structures, reflecting the Victorian architecture popular during the early 1900s. Today, Purcellville is the economic hub of western Loudoun County and a popular weekend destination for antiquing, equestrian activities, farmer’s markets, wineries, breweries, distilleries and restaurants.
