[ARCHIVED] News Release - Special Election; Proposed Change to Polling Locations; Public Hearing

PURCELLVILLE, Va. July 7, 2021 — Citizens interested in appearing on the ballot for the Town’s Special Election to be held November 2, 2021 should visit the Virginia Department of Elections Candidate Bulletin for Local Offices – Special Elections, for details on qualifications and documents that need filed prior to 5:00 PM on Friday, August 13, 2021.

On May 24, 2021, Council member Ted Greenly resigned his position on the Purcellville Town Council effective May 31, 2021. The Town Council accepted applications from citizens interested in filling this vacancy through June 3, 2021. During a special public meeting on June 11, 2021, Town Council interviewed five residents who were interested in filling the vacancy on Town Council. That evening, Town Council voted unanimously to have the citizens of Purcellville select who they would like to fill the remainder of the term until the next town elections in November 2022.

The Special Election will coincide with the state’s general election for the offices of Governor, Lt. Governor, Attorney General, and House of Delegates. Because this Town Special Election will be held concurrent with the state’s November general election, the Town is proposing to allow each Town resident to cast his or her ballot for Town Council at the same polling place as assigned to each voter for the state’s November general election. For approximately 2,731 of the town voters, located in Precinct 301, this polling place will be Emerick Elementary School. For approximately 3,776 of the town voters, located in Precinct 310, this polling place will be Mountain View Elementary School. Therefore, the Town Council is notifying the public of a proposed amendment to convert the Town from a jurisdiction with a single voting precinct for local elections, to a jurisdiction with two voting precincts for local elections, with each precinct being coterminous with County Precincts 301 and 310, and invites all interested persons to present their views to the Town Council at a public hearing to be held on Tuesday, July 27, 2021 at 7:00 PM.
