[ARCHIVED] News Release - Frozen Surfaces

PURCELLVILLE, Va. January 5, 2018 — The Town of Purcellville reminds its citizens not to walk on, skate, sled or attempt any other activities on frozen surfaces. With temperatures remaining below freezing, surfaces and water may appear frozen, but may be thin and unable to support the weight of a person.

Loudoun County emergency personnel recommend if you should find yourself in a situation where a person has fallen through the ice, do not panic and encourage the victim to keep calm. Call 911 immediately, and extend an object, such as a tree branch or a rope into the water.  Be careful to stay on the land while extending the object as to not risk falling into the ice/water.

For questions, please contact the Department of Public Works at (540) 338-7440 ext. 221.
