PURCELLVILLE, Va. April 25, 2017 - The Purcellville Police Department will be joining the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office and law enforcement agencies across the region in conducting a Prescription Drug “Take Back” on Saturday, April 29, 2017 from 10am-2pm in the parking lot of Fireman’s Field at
250 S. Nursery Ave. (directly across from Town Hall).
Residents can discard potentially dangerous, expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs for destruction. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
Rates of prescription drug abuse in the United States are increasing at alarming rates, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. These unused and unwanted medications often fall into the wrong hands and are misused or abused, and this program ensures they are disposed of properly. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. “It is our goal to make our homes and communities safer by providing a method to dispose of these drugs,” said Chief Cynthia McAlister of the Town of Purcellville Police Department.
In addition, prescription drugs should not be flushed down the toilet or poured down a sink, as they are difficult to treat in wastewater treatment plants and can pollute our water supply.
Since the inception of this program in 2010, over 8,000 pounds of unwanted and unused prescription medications have been taken off the streets of Loudoun County, including Purcellville.
