National Prescription Drug Take Back Day
Saturday, October 28, 2023
Each year, the Purcellville Police Department collaborates with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in the "Take-Back" initiative. The initiative aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs; while also educating the public about the potential for abuse and theft of medications. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
Note: Medical "sharps," such as needles and syringes, are not accepted at Take Back events.
On Saturday, Oct. 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Purcellville Police Department (PPD), along with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the Prevention Alliance of Loudoun (PAL), who will provide free medication lock boxes and drug deactivation bags to the community during the event. Bring your expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs and medications for disposal to the PPD Administrative Offices at 125 Hirst Rd., Purcellville, VA 20132. (Sites cannot accept liquids, needles or sharps, only pills or patches.) The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the United States are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.
